The last time Newcastle United played in Europe was April 11th 2013. The Magpies hosted Portuguese giants Benfica at St James’ Park, with a place in the Europa League semi-final on the line.

Alan Pardew’s side were up against it, losing 3-1 in the first leg the week before. Papiss Cisse had put Newcastle ahead, while they also hit the post twice before collapsing at the Estadio da Luz.

Back on home turf, it was clear what Newcastle had to do. A 2-0 win would send them through via the away goal rule. St James’ Park was packed out – I would know after ending up having to sit right at the top of level seven…

Having scored in the first leg, Cisse was at the heart of the action once again. The number nine found the net twice but both were chalked off for offside. It was third time lucky in the 71st minute, as Cisse put Newcastle 1-0 up and within one goal of the semi-final.

As the Magpies pushed for another, Benfica hit us on the break with Eduardo Salvio scoring in stoppage time to secure his team’s place in the final four.

Newcastle were out, but the fans were not disheartened. As the Benfica fans celebrated, the Toon Army applauded. It had been an incredible journey for Newcastle, back playing in European football for the first time in years.

Since that fateful night at St James’ Park, the Magpies haven’t even had a sniff of European qualification.
