Newcastle United desperately missed Alexander Isak against Liverpool.
There was mass panic amongst Newcastle United fans on Wednesday night when the team was announced and there was no Alexander Isak.
The 25-year-old was not even fit enough for the bench, despite travelling with the squad to Anfield.
He watched on, as Newcastle lost against Liverpool. It was another disappointing night on Merseyside, and Eddie Howe was left frustrated.
The Magpies never really looked like scoring without Alexander Isak, but the Newcastle United manager has insisted that he made the right decision in not picking the Swedish striker.

Eddie Howe explains Alexander Isak injury situation
Following Newcastle United’s loss at Anfield, Eddie Howe spoke to the club’s official website.
He was asked about Isak’s situation, with Howe admitting that he simply could not risk losing Newcastle’s most expensive signing for a lengthier period of time.
“Around lunchtime I sat down and had a long conversation with him,” he said.
“Of course, he wanted to play. But he was feeling his groin and did not feel 100% fit, so we made the decision not to play him.
“I think it was the right call. He’s too important to lose for any length of time by trying to force him to play. Disappointing to lose him because he’s such a standout player for us.
“Then it meant for a tactical reshuffle. We brought Callum in and changed system. I thought the lads delivered the system very well – very pleased with that. We’ve got real adaptability now. We’ve got various ways of playing, and it’s good to have those cards up our sleeve.”
Newcastle United should rest Alexander Isak again on Sunday
While Eddie Howe was happy with how the players handled the tactical reshuffle, it hindered the Magpies’ attacking qualities.
Anthony Gordon should have been on the left wing where he could attack Trent Alexander-Arnold. Instead, he was tasked with helping flood the midfield.
But Howe was right to go against Isak’s wishes and leave him out. He is simply far too important, so it was wise not to risk him – especially with the Carabao Cup final looming.
In truth, Howe should even consider resting Isak again on Sunday. Newcastle United face Brighton in the FA Cup, and the Toon boss should see it as another opportunity to start Callum Wilson.

The 33-year-old struggled against Liverpool, but needs more opportunities to build up his sharpness. As for Isak, it is essential that he does not break down.
Hopefully he can be fit enough to be a substitute in case of emergency, as this is still an important game. However, Howe should take the chance to preserve his star striker for a little bit longer.
