Newcastle's Callum Wilson receives major boost ahead of England World Cup decision

Callum Wilson is going to find out today if he is going to the World Cup with England, and the rumours are currently positive for the Newcastle forward.

Gareth Southgate is set to announce his 26-man squad for Qatar this afternoon, but reports are beginning to circulate on who has been left out.

It has been claimed by the Telegraph that AC Milan’s Fikayo Tomori won’t be going to the tournament. That seems like an outrageous decision given how well he has played in Serie A.

And another playing plying his trade in Italy won’t be going to the World Cup either. The Telegraph also state that Roma’s Tammy Abraham has not been selected in Southgate’s 26-man squad.

Could that mean good news for Newcastle’s number nine?

Abraham snub could help Wilson’s World Cup hopes

With Abraham out of the race, that is one less striker for Wilson to compete with for a place on the plane. It could all now come down to how many forwards Southgate wants to take.

Harry Kane is nailed on to go, then you have got Marcus Rashford and Ivan Toney competing with Wilson.

It isn’t a massive surprise to hear that Abraham has missed out. While he was incredible during his debut season with Roma, the goals have dried up.

This season he has only found the net four times in 19 games. In contrast, Wilson has six in 10. His ratio is a lot better, and he is in much better form.

And that form could be what wins Wilson a place in the squad. Given the quick turnaround between the Premier League ending and the World Cup starting, players should be able to carry on their club form to the international stage.

Wilson is on fire at the moment, and that could make him a real asset for England. The 30-year-old has worked so hard to potentially go to the World Cup, and it will be a real joy to see the Newcastle number nine represent his country.

Here’s hoping he is selected. And with Abraham reportedly missing out, Wilson’s chances of being included have just gone up.

We will find out officially at 2pm.
