Who remembers Ignacio Gonzalez’s loan spell at Newcastle United?

It was one of the transfers that ended Kevin Keegan’s second spell at St James’ Park, and the Magpies legend has recently spoke about the horrendous deal.

The Uruguayan midfielder moved to Newcastle in September 2008, arriving on a season long loan. Manager Keegan had nothing to do with his signing.

Instead, Dennis Wise and Tony Jimenez had orchestrated the deal, having seen him on YouTube.

Gonzalez made just two appearances for Newcastle, before returning to Valencia the following year.

After the transfer, Keegan walked out.

A tribunal later revealed that the signing was done without Keegan’s permission, and that it was done as a favour to two influential South American agents.

Where is Gonzalez now?

Despite his horrendous spell on Tyneside, Gonzalez is still kicking about.

Now aged 36, Gonzalez is back in his native Uruguay, playing for Montevideo Wanderers. He’s been there since 2016, competing in Uruguay’s Primera Division.

Meanwhile, a player who Wise and Jimenez decided against signing has just won the FIFA player of the year award.

What a wonderful job those two did…
