Jamaal Lascelles ranks highly in clearance statistics across the league

Newcastle United captain Jamaal Lascelles ranks at the top for clearances by a Toon player this season. The captain has exactly 100 clearences thus far.

This puts him as one of the highest for any player in the Premier League. He sits inside the top 15 at 14th place, just behind West Ham’s Kurt Zouma.

Lascelles played against Chelsea a couple of weeks ago. But for a lot of 2022, the defender hasn’t featured as much due to the arrival of Dan Burn. His partnership with Fabian Schar has made it hard for him to get back into the starting XI.

An injury during the international break may give Lascelles the chance to step up

Fabian Schar has had an injury related to his adductor muscles away with Switzerland. He won’t play against England this weekend.

However, it hasn’t been confirmed if he will definitely miss Newcastle’s clash at Tottenham next weekend. But if he is ruled out, Lascelles will certainly be the choice to replace him.

This time around most Newcastle fans will be more optimistic with the skipper at the back. He was solid in the back five against Chelsea. The last time he played before that was against Everton in February.

Despite an unlucky own goal, Lascelles, signed in 2014, answered back quickly with a header leading to an own goal by Mason Holgate. He was unlucky to miss the Aston Villa match, where Dan Burn filled in for him.

Lascelles was suffering from an illness at the time. It allowed Burn the chance to step up and he put in a Man of the Match performance.

Some fans will be hoping the Schar injury is not as bad as first feared. But should it be, Lascelles will be a capable option alongside Burn. It will be interesting to see how they operate in a centre-back partnership.
