Newcastle fans were excited to finally break their transfer record when they signed Miguel Almiron for £21 million.
While some fans were hoping the Paraguayan would be a starter against Wolves, Rafael Benitez decided against throwing him straight in. The decision seemed astute, with Ayoze Perez showing some deft touches and great work rate.
However, with 20 minutes left, the forward was introduced to the action to rapturous applause. With Christian Atsu making way, it seems possible that Benitez fancies Almiron as a winger rather than number 10 to begin with. Keen to make an instant impression, the 24-year-old gave away a quick free-kick – not in the same manner as Aleksandar Mitrovic on his debut, though!
It was obvious that he does have talent and likes to take a player on. He may have looked excitable at times, but as he settles in, hopefully, the composure will follow.
It’s nice to see a Magpies player run at a team with pace and Almiron is sure to become a fans’ favourite quickly if he effectively does so.
The Toon Army were quick to take to Twitter to praise the new signing, albeit in a deflating last-gasp draw:
Some great little touches by Almiron last night. Fearless on the ball and will give us that something extra.
2 weeks with Rafa tweaking him before Huddersfield, we could have a serious player on our hands here#NUFC

Robbed last night but ultimately should have seen the game out and that’s not the first time that’s happened. Positives, Longstaff (what a find), Hayden, Perez and Almiron looks the part. Things are looking up! #NUFC

mate Almiron #NUFC on first look was threatening. Liked what i saw and he completed 8/9 passes and even created a chance. You were right about him being a key differential early on, but do tread with caution #AskFFE #FPL

Almirón looked great when he came on. Fast and direct, exactly what we need. BUT if he cries every time we drop points he’s in for a massive shock here😂 #nufc

Brush ourselves down and fuck off to Spain, I still think Southampton will go down . It’s a point gained ,we’re getting closer to full strength and Almiron looks a busy little player . Big games coming up .

One of the positives from tonight was Almiron.
He looks rapid on & off the ball. Always positive and looking to go forward & attack.
Get him on from the start vs Hudds and let him run riot #NUFC

Next up for the Mapgies is Huddersfield and it’s a game Almiron can really show his potential and talent if called upon.
