Newcastle gave Sunderland nightmares on Halloween in 2010, when a Kevin Nolan hat-trick and a brace from Shola Ameobi saw the Magpies destroy their local rivals 5-1.
It was a completely dominant performance from Newcastle, and although hard to believe, it is still the last time Newcastle won the Tyne-Wear derby on home soil.
Nolan, was unstoppable that day, and it saw him perform his wing-flapping chicken celebration, which went on to become iconic after every goal he scored for the club.
Ameobi also lived up to his ‘Mackem-Slayer’ nickname, scoring his fifth and sixth goals against the Black Cats, and rarely have Newcastle fans enjoyed a derby day so much.
Newcastle may have a long wait for another home derby win
Newcastle were three up by half-time, which largely led to a celebratory second half, with Toon fans pouring misery onto their red and white counterparts high in the Leazes End at every opportunity.
As mentioned, that was the last home win in a Tyne-Wear derby for Newcastle, and in fact, Newcastle fans have only had one win to celebrate since then, with the ‘Ryan Taylor over the wall’ win at the Stadium Of Light coming just under a year later.
Goodness knows when the two sides will ever meet again, given the current gulf between the two teams, but Newcastle will have to make do with reminiscing about the two victories in the last decade, while they wait to end the subsequent dismal run of results between the two sides.
Every day until Christmas, Geordie Boot Boys will bring you another incredible Newcastle moment as we countdown the 25 most iconic Toon moments of the decade.
