According to Calciomercato, Newcastle are interested in signing Nahitan Nandez.

The Uruguayan midfielder is currently playing for Boca Juniors, and shone at the World Cup, which resulted in the Magpies being linked with a move last summer.

That, of course, didn’t happen, and his form in Argentina has made him a target for the Magpies once again.

We’ve been linked with several centre midfielders in the past few days, but Nandez seems the most exciting of the lot.

Nandez would be a perfect marquee signing

With talk of exits for Mo Diame and Isaac Hayden, Newcastle may need a new defensive-minded presence in midfield for next season. Nandez can be exactly that.

He is a tenacious player, and has bundles of energy that help him get around the pitch.

Diame has been such a success at Newcastle because of his energy and ability to win the ball back, which are the exact qualities that Nandez possesses.

At 23-years-old, he already has stacks of experience. His first-team debut at Penarol came at the age of 19.

And despite being predominantly a defensive midfielder, he certainly has an eye for a goal. In his final season at Penarol he scored seven times, and last season he netted four for Boca. The new Primera Division kicked off in Argentina in January, and he already has two goals to his name.

The report states that Nandez’s asking price is 20 million euros, which is about £18million. It would make him Newcastle’s second most expensive player, but he may be worth every penny.
