Two years after leaving Newcastle United, Vurnon Anita could be on the move once again.

According to Greek site SDNA, Panathinaikos are interested in a move for the versatile Dutchman, who is set to be released by Leeds United.

Anita’s time in Yorkshire hasn’t gone to plan, and last season he was sent out on loan to Willem II where he made 27 appearances.

And the 30-year-old could be set to experience another league this season. Greek giants Panathinaikos are very interested in signing Anita despite their financial issues.

And Anita wouldn’t be the first player with Newcastle links to be targeted by the Greens. Earlier this summer, SDNA claimed that they wanted to sign Calum Roberts and Rolando Aarons. Their technical director is former Toon hero Nikos Dabizas, which explains things.

Anita didn’t match expectations at Newcastle

Anita arrived at Newcastle in 2012 for £6.7million. He was our only signing following the fifth place finish the season prior. Yes, Mike Ashley helped Alan Pardew kick on and prepare for a season in the Europa League with just one signing.

The Ajax academy graduate was incredibly gifted in possession, but never truly made a mark at St James’ Park. You could argue he wasn’t used correctly, but his five years as a Toon player saw him known for his versatility more than his talent.

In the Championship, Anita played here there and everywhere, with Rafa Benitez often calling upon Mr Reliable to come in and do a job. Once promotion was sealed, Anita’s contract came to an end and he headed to Leeds United on a free.

That move has seen his career decline even more, which is sad to see. Anita was a good lad who gave his all during a pretty rough time for Newcastle United. Hopefully a move to Greece can see him get back to his best.
