Newcastle need reinforcements at left-back this summer, so a report that Ryan Bertrand could be available should catch the Magpies’ attention.

According to the Daily Echo, Southampton are considering selling either Bertrand or Matt Targett, another left-back who Newcastle have previously been interested in.

But it is the former who we should take a look at. The ex Chelsea defender is an experienced Premier League player, having played in the top flight for the Blues, the Saints and Aston Villa. He’s even a Champions League winner.

While he is set to turn 30 in August, Bertrand still has a lot to offer.

The local lad needs competition, and Bertrand would bring exactly that. And as a more attacking defender, he could add an extra dimension to Newcastle’s attack.

If we continue to use a back five next season, Bertrand could be even more useful. Matt Ritchie has operated at left wing-back and has been exceptional. But the Southampton man would be a more natural fit and could allow Ritchie to play further up the pitch.

Despite his age, Bertrand would be an excellent signing. He’d add competition to an area in the pitch that has desperately needed it for years.
