According to Tuttomercatoweb, Newcastle are interested in former Sunderland forward Fabio Borini.

While we certainly need attacking reinforcements in January, is this really what we want?

The Italian was nothing special during his time at the Stadium of Light, scoring the odd key goal here and there. In fact, his entire Sunderland career was made on the back of a wonder-goal against Newcastle. Other than that, he wasn’t anything special.

His performances for the Black Cats seemed to get worse and worse as time went by, and by the time Sunderland were relegated from the Premier League, many fans had soured on him.

In 2017, he amazingly got himself a move to AC Milan, which shocked everyone. Despite playing terribly for the worst team in the Premier League, he somehow got himself a move to one of the most historic clubs in Europe.

Newcastle fans do not want Borini

Transfers cause a lot of debate among Newcastle fans. Either the players we’re linked with will cost too much money, they’re not good enough, or they used to play for Sunderland.

Over the years we’ve signed plenty of players who used to represent our neighbours, with varying degrees of success. And with another former Mackem linked with a move to St James’ Park, it’s safe to say the fans aren’t keen.

With all the talk of a takeover and funds being available in January, signing the former Sunderland number nine would seem like another step backwards. While we aren’t flush with options going forward, surely there are better out there?

He did have a habit of scoring against Newcastle, but he didn’t seem to score many against anyone else.

Let’s pray that this rumour doesn’t come to fruition in the January window.
