It is well documented that the Spaniard’s contract at St James’ Park is coming to an end, and we are no closer to knowing whether or not he will be staying at the club.
While the Chronicle have refuted the claims of a replacement being lined up, BT Sports’ Ligue 1 commentator David Crossan has given his assessment of Genesio.
While Crossan is hardly an influential pundit, his views on the current Lyon manager are certainly interesting.
So @lequipe reporting @NUFC interest in @OL coach Genesio should @rafabenitezweb move on. I’m full of admiration for how Genesio has improved @OL talented youngsters but this would obviously be a downgrade. Genesio now working with renowned agent #Zahavi.

“I’m full of admiration for how Genesio has improved Lyon’s talented youngsters but this would obviously be a downgrade,” Crossan wrote on his official Twitter account.
To be fair, there’s not much chance of Newcastle getting an upgrade on Benitez. We were punching above our weight when we got him in 2016, and it’s a miracle that he’s still here.
Genesio sounds ideal for Ashley’s Newcastle
Crossan’s comments on Genesio’s ability to improve young players are interesting. This would certainly appeal to Mike Ashley.
In years gone by, Newcastle’s recruitment policy has been to sign young players with a high re-sale value. But that only works with the right coaching. If Bentiez does leave, bringing in someone with Genesio’s capabilities makes perfect sense for Ashley.
But why should we listen to a Ligue 1 commentator? Well, he was right about Antonio Barreca in January.
Honestly Barreca has been playing worse for Monaco than Manquillo did for Marseille https://t.co/bhdjwny1Su

The Italian hasn’t been a hit since arriving at the club, making just once appearance. He can’t even get on the bench nowadays.
But back to Genesio. The 52-year-old is out of contract in the summer, so could also be looking for a new job just like Benitez.
His Lyon side were knocked out of the Champions League by Barcelona this week, and are currently third in Ligue 1, 24 points behind leaders PSG.
However, while he might have the tools to be a success at Newcastle, there is only one man that fans want to see in the dugout. Anything other than Benitez staying will crank the pressure on Ashley up an extra notch.
